About the Competition

(In 2022, due to covid, instead of a contest we held an evaluation. Students submitted a recording and were evaluated on the basis of their recording.)

Margaret Schmitt Memorial Piano Competition (also known as Chopin Competition) is a bi-annual competition held in January. Students compete with a 3-10 minute memorized selection by Frederic Chopin. Students in grades 7-12 of Kenosha Racine Music Teachers Association members are eligible to enter, as well as students of other Racine and Kenosha County teachers. There are junior and senior divisions, and monetary prizes are awarded in each division. All performers receive a certificate and a written evaluation.  A Winner's Recital is held at a later date.

The Margaret Schmitt Memorial Piano Competition has been held either annually or biannually since 1968.  It is sponsored by a generous grant from the Kenosha Community Foundation.
