About the Competition

This is a bi-annual competition held in January. Students compete with a 3-10 minute memorized selection by Frederic Chopin. Students in grades 7-12 of Kenosha Racine Music Teachers Association members are eligible to enter, as well as students of other Racine and Kenosha County teachers. There are junior and senior divisions, and monetary prizes are awarded in each division. All performers receive a certificate and a written evaluation.  A Winner's Recital is held at a later date.

The Margaret Schmitt Memorial Piano Competition has been held either annually or biannually since 1968.  It is sponsored by a generous grant from the Kenosha Community Foundation.

Below is the COVID protocol for the competition:

pianos used for warm up as well as performance will be sanitized prior to the competition and warm up period.

A canister of antiseptic hand wipes and a plastic bag for disposal of the wipes will be in each warm up room as well as in the recital hall.  Students must sanitize their hands before touching the instrument.  In that way, the instrument does not need to be sanitized before each use.  However, if they wish to do so, it is their choice.

The wearing of a mask is required by the institution we are holding the competition at.  Students are instructed to arrive in time to warm up and be at the door of the competition room no more than 5 minutes prior to their performance time.  Attendance to the competition is restricted to the parents or household of the performer and their teacher.
